Remembering Ray Norman

It is with sympathy and sadness that we inform members of the recent passing of Ray Norman, who was killed in an avalanche last Saturday near Smithers, BC:

A resident of Canmore, Ray was well known in the skiing and mountaineering communities and someone who freely volunteered his time and talents helping others. Ray was also an active member of the Bow Waters Jackrabbits, who had been assisting Heather Opseth, his daughter, with the Bunnies.

We extend our sincerest condolences to family and friends at this difficult time.

January 23rd ski pictures

Hi everyone,

My name is Shaun Taylor, I'm the dad of Evan and Keegan and this is our first year with Bow Waters Jackrabbits.

You may have seen me skiing around (and occasionally laying in the snow) to take photos of the kids. I tried to get images of all the groups while looking for some interesting angles, lighting, backgrounds and fun shots. Here's some of the images that I think turned out ok - hope you enjoy them.

West Bragg Creek Classic

bragg creek ski club, is open to anyone in the ski community who would

First Ski Day

The weather was a bit brisk with the high wind and snow, but the kids and parents braved it all.  It was tough to get the bunnies out of the lodge after the snack break.  Although the meeting room B was a bit crowded, it was good to see so many new and old faces. Instructor Jeff showing the bunnies how to fall on your kiester If you have any video or photos that you would like to share with the rest of the club, please send them to us via the "photos dropbox" which is a click away on the left.

First Ski Lesson Sunday - Please Read!

This Sunday, December 12 is our first meeting of the club this season.  We will be meeting at 10 am at the Canmore Nordic Centre in Meeting Room B (up the stairs).  We will have a short meeting followed by a lesson and assessment for all the children.

Trail tickets are required on our ski days at a cost of $5 for children age 6 and up and $10 for adults.  Children 5 and under are free.  Please do not purchase your tickets at the ticket booth when you arrive – this is a special rate for BWJR - we will have tickets available in Meeting Room B.  Please bring cash or a cheque payable to Susan Duska to pay for your tickets – exact change is always appreciated!

Also, please remember to bring your new waivers, if you have not already signed them.  If the new waiver is not signed, you and your children will not be able to ski with the club on Sunday!  Click here for the waiver

Please dress for the weather and come ready to have some fun!

Welcome to a New Season!

Dear Jackrabbit families,

Firstly, welcome back to returning members, and a big welcome to all our new members!  We have had a tremendous amount of interest in the Jackrabbits program over the past few weeks, so this should be a great season, with several new families joining us.

Click here for the season schedule. There may be some changes depending on weather and snow conditions.

This year, you will need to confirm the lesson is a “go” by consulting this website (top left).  Lessons are cancelled if the temperature falls below -20C with wind chill.  You can also get this on your cell phone with Twitter.  Myron put up a "how-to" on the website below.  The decision is made at 6pm Saturday the night before, but if the weather changes a lot, check back again at 8am for an update.

The first lesson is this Sunday, December 12.  It will be at the Canmore Nordic Centre and we will meet in Meeting Room B.   The lesson will run from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon. There will be a brief orientation at 10:00am, during which the children will meet their coaches.

Members can eat lunch in Meeting Room B after the lessonsPlease note that the room is booked until 1:00 pm.  If you are planning to stay and ski for the afternoon, please remove your belongings by 1:00 pm.  The club is responsible for keeping the room tidy.  Bow Waters Jackrabbits will be charged for any cleanup required in the meeting room.  Please clean up after yourselves.

Trail fees are in effect for the Nordic Centre and the club’s rate is discounted.  The amount will be posted shortly.  Children 5 and under are free and instructors tickets are provided.

A few housekeeping points:

Children need to be dressed and ready to ski, so please have their skis waxed beforehand. They should also have a snack and a drink, and an extra pair of mitts, all of which they need to carry themselves.

Children 6 years old and younger under need a parent to accompany them during lessons.

Finally, CCA updated their waiver this year.  If you have not yet signed and returned the new waiver, please do so.   I will collect these on Sunday as well.

Looking forward to meeting everyone soon!

Family Day Weekend ski trip to Golden option

Come to Golden for their fantastic Nordic trails on Feb 19 and 20, 2011.   We will meet together on the Saturday and Sunday to plan trips based on the abilities of those present - there are lots of possibilities between the 2 Nordic Ski areas.  Dawn Mountain has 33 km of trails that are tracked for both classic and skate skiing. The Golden Golf Course also has track set trails if there is enough snow.

As this is the Family Day long weekend, I recommend you book your accommodation asap.

For more information please contact Carolyn Lindsay or Dave Rempel

See www.goldennordicclub.ca for more information on their trails.

New Ski Instructors - training 2010

This last weekend was "Introduction to Community Coaching" to which Bow Waters Jackrabbits had 3 volunteer parents become our new instructors, Helen Buchanan, Heather Opseth, and John Holmes.  The course involves 2 days of course work and 1 day of on-snow training.  The club is always looking for new instructors, something to think about for next year.  Thanks guys for volunteering.
